4 Clear Signs That You Need Replacement Dentures

Have you ever waited a long time to have your eyes checked? When you finally get your new prescription and new glasses, you’re surprised by how much better you can see! You may even wonder how you coped before without them. The same can happen with dentures. Day by day, you may not notice differences in your replacement teeth, but about every couple of years, your dentures need to be adjusted or replaced.

If you’ve become accustomed to how your old dentures fit, you may not realize when it’s time to get new ones. Here are four clear signs that will let you know you need to see the dentist for replacement dentures.

Your Dentures Are Loose.

Over time, dentures can slowly start to feel loose because the jawbone steadily loses density and changes shape. As a result, the dentures don’t fit as snugly as they once did, and they require relining. Without regular adjustments, your dentures can fail to chew food well, slip out of place, or even come out! At a certain point, loose dentures simply need to be replaced with a new set to give you that custom, perfect fit again.

Your Dentures Are Broken or Damaged.

These days, dentures are pretty durable, but they are far from being completely indestructible. In fact, you can crack or break them by dropping them onto hard floors. Unfortunately, once dentures have been damaged or broken, they need to be replaced because most dental offices can only perform minor adjustments, not major repairs. However, your new dentures will feel much more comfortable and look more natural than if you try to wear broken replacement teeth.

You Struggle to Speak Clearly.

Communicating with others is essential, and if you are having trouble talking, it can interfere with your quality of life and self-esteem. Replacing your old dentures with properly fitting ones can give you confidence, help you connect with your loved ones and friends, and enable you to communicate your needs to those around you.

Your Gums Are Sore from Your Dentures.

When dentures fit correctly, they shouldn’t cause discomfort or press against your gums. They should rest on top of the gums and rely on suction to stay in place. If your gums start to become irritated, develop sores, or feel painful, it means something needs to change! In some cases, your dentist may be able to reline the dentures, but replacement may be necessary.

Just as keeping your eye prescription updated will allow you to see more clearly, having dentures that fit properly will help you continue to enjoy a more functional, comfortable, and confident smile.
